What we know today as the West
Country - Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset - was once
covered by a vast sub-Roman kingdom called Dumnonia. The name
derives from the Celtic Iron Age & Roman-British tribe of the
Dumnonii who lived in the two latter counties and the western part of
Somerset. The name is retained today in Devon, the Saxon modern
version derived from Defnas (the men of Devon) via the
late-Celtic form, Dyfneint.

Abbot Pottery Caroline
Smith
is a Devon potter whose slip decorated earthenware reflects the
West Country landscape. After working for a local pottery she set
up this family business with her father. The Moorland design or 'Sheep
Pottery' is the result of walking and riding on Dartmoor from an early
age and her interest in the natural world. The methods used in
production,
including hand throwing on the wheel, follow the tradition long
established
by the old Torquay Potteries.

Bull Point Lighthouse Bull
Point Lighthouse gives a guide to vessels navigating off the North
Devon Coast with a red sector light marking the Rockham Shoal and the
Morte Stone off Morte Point.
The light was first established in 1879 on the headland near the village of Mortehoe, North Devon, and operated without undue incident for 93 years, but on 18th September, 1972, the Principal Keeper reported ground movement in the area of the engine room and the passage leading to the lighthouse, and that 2" fissures were opening up. In the early hours of Sunday morning, 24th September, 15 metres of the cliff face crashed into the sea and a further 15 metres subsided steeply causing deep fissures to open up inside the boundary wall. Walls cracked and the engine/fog signal station partly collapsed, leaving it in a dangerous condition and putting the fog signal out of action. |
Mortehoe:From the
entrance to
the car park at Mortehoe, follow the sign, “Lighthouse, Lee.” After a
short
distance the HM Coastguard Station will appear on the left followed by
a
sign marked Rockham Bay, continue on until arriving at a white painted
gate,
which is the entrance of the access road leading to Bull Point
Lighthouse. (marked on signpost) |

Finch Foundry The
tiny village of Sticklepath in Devon would once have resounded
with the sound of this 19th-century water-powered forge, which
produced agricultural and mining hand tools. So bad was the vibration
that the pub next door had to fit beading along its shelves to stop
the glasses falling off. Opened in 1814, the foundry continued in
use until 1960. Restoration work by the Trust means that it is still
in working order however, and the three waterwheels that drive the
huge tilt hammers and grindstone can still be seen in action.

garden at the historic Flete House in South Devon is slowly being
restored
after decades of neglect. A
Victorian walled garden which was left to fall into disrepair for 50
years, is being restored to its former glory. The garden is at Flete
Estate - an historic site near Ermington in South Devon. There
has
been a Manor at this spot since the time of the Conquest. Then, during
the 19th century the magnificent gardens were created. However,
the
gardens slipped into disrepair at the outbreak of WW2, and from 1956 to
1998, they were used to grow Christmas trees. And the
project
even has the support of the Chinese Government.

Hackney Marshes Hackney
Marshes LNR comprises meadows, ponds and streams on the edge of
Kingsteignton.The
disused Hackney canal bordered the southern end of the Marshes. It was
opened in 1843 to decrease the distance that pack-horses carting clay
had to travel. The clay, owned by Lord Clifford, was excavated from the
Chudleigh Knighton, Preston and Kingsteignton areas. Originally the
pack-horses carted the clay to the clay cellars in the Hackney hamlet
from where the bargemen or lightermen loaded the barges. The ruins of
the Hackney hamlet are a few hundred metres from Hackney Marshes,
further along the footpath to the estuary. The canal enabled barges to
go right up to Kingsteignton. Trading along the canal ceased in 1928.

Plymouth Gin Distillery You
wouldn’t guess it at a glance, but this is one of Plymouth’s oldest
buildings.
Long thought to be a former friary (hence the name), it is now seen as
a
Tudor merchant’s house, converted to a gin distillery in 1793. Here is
made
the Plymouth Gin traditionally provided to men on Royal Navy ships.
There
are guided tours of the works. Or you can enjoy a meal or a drink on
the
premises. The former hall with its fine timber barrel roof built in
1431
is now a cocktail lounge. There is also a café and shop.
