HORSE RACING
Details Written up In Computer Active's Excellant Webguide
Racing Network
www.racing-network.co.uk
The chaotic design may remind you of a particularly garish jockey's tunic, but there's plenty of worthwhile information on the Racing Network site.
As well as the latest news and results, there's a list of horses and trainers to follow and plenty of statistics and information on past form. A well-used message board gives the site a friendly feel and, who knows, you might even glean a few profitable tips.
Racing Post
www.racingpost.co.uk
The design might be a little unimaginative, but this site is a goldmine for all those serious about racing, with all the latest news, results and opinion on the gee-gees.
If you're fond of the odd flutter, you'll especially like the daily analysis of the best odds available and the in-depth guides to major races. There's also fun to be had comparing the performances of the major tipsters and a comprehensive archive.
Sporting Life
www.sporting-life.com/racing/news
Sporting Life is synonymous with the latest racing news and the website doesn't disappoint.
The plain design has remained fairly static since the site's inception, but the breadth and depth of the information on offer has improved beyond recognition. Regular columns by some of the most respected names in racing preview upcoming meetings and advise you who to back and who to avoid, while a simple registration procedure allows you to access the very latest results and prices.
Aintree
www.aintree.co.uk
The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world and once a year the nation's eyes are on Aintree. Everyone from hardened gamblers to sweet old Grannies has a punt on The National and you'd be well advised to visit this site before you place your bets (online, of course).
This well-organised site allows you to whet your appetite, by finding out about famous races and horses of days gone by, as well as helping you plan your trip - with a section devoted to travel details and ticketing arrangements.
British Horseracing Board
www.bhb.co.uk
This official site for the governing body of the sport is very nicely presented and contains a surprising amount of useful information. At one end of the spectrum, there's an excellent guide to making the most of your day at the races, complete with impressive multimedia elements. At the other, there's plenty of information for those who want to go the whole hog and buy their own racehorse. Particularly useful for potential owners is the list of registered trainers.
Channel 4 Guide to Racing
www.channel4.com/sport/racing_c4
One of the best things about Channel Four's extensive coverage is the characters involved and it's made an impressive effort to extend their influence to this website.
Irascible rogue John McCririck features heavily, together with his trademark hand signals, and the other presenters also lend a hand. Each delivers expert opinion and previews upcoming races in entertaining style.
There's also a great introduction to the daunting world of yankees, trebles and each-way bets, with a comprehensive guide to betting.
Come Racing
www.comeracing.co.uk
If you've always fancied putting on your fancy hat and having a day out at the gee-gees but are unsure where to go then you should take a look at this lively site. Compiled by the British Racecourse Association it includes details of all 59 courses in the UK and a nice interactive map to point you in the right direction. There's also an annual calendar for each course so you know when to go, together with a list of special events ranging from big race days to medieval jousts.
Racing Chronicle
www.racing-chronicle.co.uk
Most horse racing sites seem to believe that less is more, with pages of dry results and statistics followed by more pages of results and statistics. Not this one, though. Racing Chronicle doesn't have the depth of other sites but the stunning photographs capture racing in all its thunderous, colourful glory.
Another bonus is the speed with which the site is updated - by most afternoons you can see action shots of the favourites romping to victory or falling at the first.
