"I find that the name Wessex is
getting taken up everywhere and it would be a
pity
for us to lose the right to it for lack of asserting it" Thomas Hardy first used the term "Wessex" in his 1874 novel, Far From the Madding Crowd. Hardy's vast works conformed to the region that he envisioned and called Wessex. But as Thomas Hardy himself always maintained, "This is an imaginative Wessex only". In respect of places described under fictitious or ancient names in the novels -– for reason that seemed good at the time of writing them –- and kept up in the poems –- discerning people have affirmed in print that they clearly recognize the originals: such as Shaftesbury in ‘Shaston,’ Sturminster Newton in ‘Stourcastle,’ Dorchester in ‘Casterbridge,’ Salisbury Plain in ‘The Great Plain,’ Cranborne Chase in ‘The Chase,’ Beaminster in ‘Emminster,’ Bere Regis in ‘Kingsbere,’ Woodbury Hill in ‘Greenhill,’ Wool Bridge in ‘Wellbridge,’ Harfoot or Harput Lane in ‘Stagfoot Lane,’ Hazlebury in ‘Nuttlebury,’ Bridport in ‘Port Bredy,’ Maiden Newton in ‘Chalk Newton,’ a farm near Nettlecombe Tout in ‘Flintcomb Ash,’ Sherbourne in ‘Sherton Abbas,’ Milton Abbey in ‘Middleton Abbey,’ Cerne Abbas in ‘Abbot's Cernel,’ Evershot in ‘Evershead,’ Taunton in ‘Toneborough,’ Bournemouth in ‘Sandbourne,’ Winchester in ‘Wintonchester,’ Oxford in ‘Christminster,’ Reading in ‘Aldbrickham,’ Newbury in ‘Kennetbridge,’ Wantage in ‘Alferdston,’ Basingstoke in ‘Stoke Barehills,’ and so on. |

ANCIENT YEW TREE
OF ASHBRITTLE A series of country lanes winding through the
heart of the English county of Somerset lead to the
village of Ashbrittle. This small village holds an
ancient treasure in its churchyard: a 3000 year old
example of the English Yew, Taxus baccata. The tree was
mature when Stonehenge was in use, making the 15th
century church near where it grows a youngster in
comparison. As a plaque near the tree declares,
"Generations of local people have cherished this tree,
one of the oldest living things in Britain."

BARRINGTON HILL NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE
Barrington Hill National Nature
Reserve comprises four meadows surrounded by well
established hedges on gently sloping clay-rich soils. It
represents a large area of species-rich unimproved
neutral grassland, which is now rare nationally. The
site is particularly notable for its abundance of rare
French oat-grass, green-winged orchid and adder's
tongue. The hedgerows (some with large oaks) contribute
to the diversity of the site. Local butterflies include
common blue, meadow brown, speckled wood, brimstone and
orange tip. |
Barrington Hill is 2 km west of the A358, midway between the villages of Windmill Hill and Bickenhall (1 km to the south east and north west respectively).By car, access to the site is via minor roads from the A358. The entrance to the site is near Barrington Hill Farm on the minor road from Bickenhall to Horton village. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
BISHOPS LYDEARD MILL Located in the Vale of
Taunton Deane, Bishops Lydeard is a small village
near the market town of Taunton. There were
originally two mills in the village, Higher and
Lower, supplying the area with flour. Higher mill
has been subsequently demolished, leaving this
excellent example of an overshot waterwheel at the
lower mill. Picture of the mill wheel. The watermill has been
renovated over the past few years and was officially
opened by the town Mayor on Saturday 10th May 2003.
Work
has been done to restore the mill so that it is a
working mill.

THE MINISTRY OF CAKE
Ministry
of Cake is the new name for dessert manufacturer
Maynard Scotts; a company which has come a long way
since it was set up just outside Taunton way back in
1840. It produces mainly desserts - ranging from the
classic apple pie to luxury cheese cake - and now lays
claim to being the biggest manufacturer of chocolate
fudge cake for foodservice. They supply up-market

Visitors to Taunton can naturally discover the many architectural gems it has to offer, but many more can be discovered by following the Taunton Heritage Trail. This self-guided, circular walk illustrated by attractive brass plaques in the pavement leads visitors past some great places of interest. Some amazing and some more quirky such as the three wooden pigs marking the area of the Old Pig Market which operated from 1614 to 1882. TAUNTON -St MARY MAGDALENE
Standing at an amazing 163½' high to the top of the pinnacles, St Mary's is one of the best-known examples of the exuberant Somerset towers financed by the prosperity created by the wool trade and has been the town church since 1308 - a heritage of nearly 700 years. The church’s interior is a splendour with it's Tudor ceiling of the nave and chancel adorned with a hundred or more gilded angels. The stained glass too is particularly fine with some bright rich fragments remaining from medieval times on the north side. On looking up as you leave the church you cannot help but be stunned by the drama of the beautiful west window. |

VIRGIN HOT AIR
BALOONING
If you’re looking to explore
southern Somerset, then a hot air balloon ride from
Taunton - ‘town on the River Tone' - is a fantastic way to
do it. In fact, anything else just wouldn’t be cricket.
The town sits in the spectacular Vale of Taunton Deane
between the Quantock and Blackdown Hills. It’s skyline is
dominated by several impressive churches including that of
St James, which towers over the Somerset County Cricket
Club’s ground. Whilst ballooning over Taunton it is
possible to see beautiful Vivary Park, home of the annual
Taunton Flower Shower, and Taunton Castle, which dates
back as far as the Anglo Saxon times of 710. The
Bridgewater and Taunton Canal is a fantastic sight to see
on a Taunton Virgin Balloon Flight as colourful barges can
be seen wending their way along the waterway. More
unusually, military pill-boxes can be seen on the banks of
the canal as it was planned to be a Stop Line to halt
invading enemies during WWII. Whichever way the wind takes
you, you’ll find some of the most quintessentially English
countryside passing below the basket of your hot air
balloon. Somerset offers other possible highlights such as
Wellington to the west and the 175ft column built to
honour the Iron Duke, Arthur Wellesley the Duke of
Wellington, himself. To the east, the historic market town
of Yeovil, Yeovil Country Park, and the unusual Barwick
park follies beckon. |

so when I found there was a Greek restaurant in town I
thought I would give it a go and I am very glad I did, the
food is excellent, the choice outstanding, the service is
spot on and they have managed to create an atmosphere

COSY CLUB Although
it has 'club' in the name, there is no private membship
it but does give the feel when you walk in that there is
something exclusive about it; its like the club that
everyone belongs to and you feel like you've been going
there forever. The first thing that is different when
you walk in is that you are immediately faced with
stairs because you either go upstairs which has a
smaller cosy area with comfy chairs leading to a huge
spacious dining area with central bar, or
downstairs to another space with
an eclectic mix of
furniture which leads to The Den,an underground inner
sanctum of more cosiness. The Den area is sperated by
aocrridor and has its own bar , there is a long table in
the centre and a large screen TV,not designed as
as sports bar but as a place where a small conference
could be held, or a family party. A lift has been fitted
to go in both directions and is big enough for a
wheelchair. On the family front ,another good thing
about The Cosy Club is its family friendly policy,
with children welcome up to 10pm and as it is just
across the street from the Registry Office at the
Municiple Building, could be used for wedding parties.
There is a table armed with board games, and colouring
books to encourage family interaction aswell as
newspapers and magazines laid out.The food ranges from a
full breakfast,including vegetarian,to sandwiches,
steaks and tapas and drinks range from coffee and
tea to a great selection of fruit juices wines and
cocktails.

Mount Somerset The excellent food is one of
the big attractions at The Mount Somerset that boasts
two first class restaurants, quite possibly the finest
restaurants in Taunton. Our menu combines classic
favourites and imaginative new dishes using the
freshest, finest ingredients – sourced locally
wherever possible. Quantock chicken, Exmoor lamb,
Brixham Lobster and crab, and Somerset cheeses feature
regularly. Our speciality home-baked breads are
renowned locally for a very good reason – they are
irresistible. So too are our delightful canapés and
petit fours, which provide the prelude and grand
finale to any dining experience at The Mount Somerset.Yet the experience is not
just about our award-winning food and we pay equal
attention to the quality of the setting, recognising
that fine linen, exquisite tableware and excellent
service can lift a meal from good to truly
memorable. Watch the sun set while you settle
down with an aperitif in the west-facing Somerset Room or in our Garden Room.

Very 'safe' menu. Nothing
too challenging for the cook. Well presented and the
service was good. The clientele is mainly over 60's though
and the atmosphere much too serious for the food on offer. |

Have been to this restaurant
several times and never fails to impress. The food is
excellent though rustic which is part of the charm.
Portions are generous and it is a struggle to do three
courses but of course we did and the sweets were fab.
Authentic ambiance adds to the dining experience. Yep we
will be returning! |

Orchards In this lovely old building (Circa 1530) which
boasts a wealth of period features including low beamed
ceilings, inglenook fireplaces, intriguing stairways and
cosy alcoves. Dining here is
leisurely and relaxing yet, in this delightful
country-side location, it is hard to imagine that you
are just a few convenient minutes drive away from
Taunton's busy town centre.Such
ambience is matched by the freshly and professionally
prepared dishes - the emphasis being on wholly fresh
food with many vegetarian and fish specialities.

PIZZA EXPRESS In 1965, an English eccentric
entrepreneur by the name of Peter Boizot changed the
face of British dining forever. He teamed up with
Enzo Apicella, a fiery Italian designer, to create a
new type of restaurant that shattered the mould and
rewrote the rule book.Out
went the dull food, lacklustre interiors and
indifferent service that were the standards of the
day. In came a vivid, passionate approach to dining
thanks to the synergy of cultures from the two very
different men - Italian flair and panache coupled with
the very best of English creativity and idiosyncrasy.
PizzaExpress was born.

Pizza
Hut We started our life in 1958
when Frank and Dan Carney opened the first Hut in
Wichita, Kansas. The first Pizza Hut restaurant was
only small, with enough room for 25 seats; the
restaurant sign only had space for nine letters. Frank
and Dan wanted to have 'Pizza' in the name, which left
space for just 3 more letters. Because the building
looked like a hut... Pizza Hut was born! Fifteen years
later, the first UK restaurant opened. Since then we
have grown to become the biggest Pizza Company on the
planet. We're the UK's leading pizza restaurant and
delivery chain too, with over 600 outlets across the
country. We are part of Yum Restaurants International
(who also own KFC, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's, A
& W and Pizza Hut Worldwide).

SUBWAY Deliciously filled bagettes with
lovely sauces and fillings to choice.Long hours at
work and hectic lifestyles mean we don’t always have
time to prepare and cook healthy meals, and instead
rely on grabbing something to eat on the move. The
problem is, we often end up eating food that’s highly
processed, packed with calories and fat, but contains
little in the way of vitamins, minerals and fibre –
not exactly a good foundation for a healthy diet.
Fortunately though, food on the go doesn’t have to
mean unhealthy food if you eat at one of the numerous
SUBWAY® stores throughout the UK and Republic of
Ireland. Experts in toasted and cold submarine or SUB
sandwiches, wraps and salads, SUBWAY® stores are well
known for providing low fat and fresher alternatives
to burgers, kebabs, pizza, fried chicken and fries.

Taunton Freeriders is a community mountain bike project in partnership with the Forestry Commission who are developing a series of northshore and downhill (DH) style mountain bike trails just outside of the town. Run by volunteers from the local close-knit riding community and funded solely by kind donations, they are also involved with the redevelopment of the "Norton Dirt Jumps" and campaigning for a replacement skatepark at Hamilton Park and better facilities for alternative sports (e.g. BMX, skateboard, in-line skates, mountain biking, parkour among others). |
Somerset County Cricket Club Somerset
County Cricket Club was first formed
in August 1875, following a cricket
match at Sidmouth between the
Gentlemen of Somerset and their
Devon hosts, in which the visitors
were successful. Originally the idea
of those who had formed the County
Club was not to have a home ground,
but to take their matches to
different grounds around Somerset.
When the team played in Taunton they
chose Fullands School as the venue,
which at the time was one of the
best in the region.
The Somerset team remained nomadic until 1881, when Taunton Athletic Club opened a sports centre on the Priory Fields next door to the River Tone, which soon became the home to the County Club.Somerset played their first 'home' match during 1882 and during that year one of the teams to pay a visit were the Australian tourists.Initially Somerset did not enjoy first class status, but after winning the 'second-class championship' in 1890 first class status followed in 1891 and since then the Club has enjoyed a long and colourful history, with many ups and downs, both on and off the pitch. Whatever the fortunes of the team on the field the Club has remained at it's County Ground home, which it has owned since it was first acquired by the then secretary Henr y Murray-Anderdon, just before the start of the 20th Century.Down the years Somerset has had many colourful and influential characters playing for them including Lionel Palairet, Sammy Woods, Jack White, Arthur Wellard and Harold Gimblett, who all left their mark on the Club before the 2nd World War. However it was not until the late 1970's and early 1980's that Somerset won it's first trophy, but when it did the Club enjoyed a golden era winning five competitions in as many years. The young side that had been brought together under the watchful eye of Brian Close included Ian Botham, Viv Richards and Joel Garner who were Captained by Brian Rose, who is now the Director of Cricket at the Club.Following the 'Glory Years' the Club's loyal supporters had to wait a further 18 years before they enjoyed the sweet taste of success again, which they did in 2001 when they lifted the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. Further success followed four years later with winning the Twenty20 Cup and now with a young team full of exciting talent, the Club that was formed in Devon 131 years ago, looks to be on the verge of another golden era and will be bidding to win the one trophy that has eluded them up until now - the coveted County Championship |

Sir Ian Botham |
Sir Vivian Richards |
Wessex.me.uk was
delighted when the great Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham
was awarded a knighthood by the Queen. Beefy,
who has raised more than £10m for leukaemia
charities (and in doing so helped to increase
the survival rate of sufferers), is a true
sporting hero who still stood out in an era
when the best sporting stars married their
talents with immense personality. On the field there was no-one better than Beefy, he played 102 Tests for England in a career that lasted from 1974 to 1993, took 383 wickets (which remains an English record) and scored 5,200 runs. He was the fastest person (in terms of matches) to reach the landmarks of 1000 runs and 100 wickets, 2000 / 200 and 3000 / 300. He was the first person to achieve 300 wickets and 5000 runs, plus he was the first person to get over 10 wickets and 100 runs in a test match. He scored a century and took 5 wickets in an innings on 5 occasions, a feat no-one else has achieved more than twice. A former Wisden Cricketer of the year, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sport Personality of the Year Awards in 2004 and was appointed an OBE in 1992. Being controversial only added to his appeal. Whereas today a sportsman’s lifestyle is geared 110% towards enhancing onfield performance, Botham’s exploits are the stuff of legend. In 1986 he was briefly banned from cricket for smoking cannabis, an extramarital affair prompted a public apology to his wife, he was arrested in Australia for assault (later to be bailed by Dennis Lillee and a six-pack of beer), he held lavish parties, ate rather too well (prompting accusations of being overweight, for shame), said he’d like to send his mother-in-law to Lahore, was a legendary drinker, sledged the fielders…. you could go on for days. Oh, and he is now the face of British Beef! The Keele Reefer Association, will dedicate its match against Ottery St Mary on July 31 to the (playing) life and times of the great Sir Beefy, the most flamboyant and influential all-rounder ever to take the field. We salute you Sir! |
In the
latest edition of the cricketing bible Wisden,
Sir Vivian Richards was voted one of the five
greatest cricketers of the 20th century. In the words of no lesser judge than Ian Botham, "There has never been a better player". Whatever the nature of any specific accolade, there can be no doubt that during a test match career running between 1974 and 1991, Viv Richards proved himself one of the most accomplished, exciting and destructive batsmen that the world stage has ever seen. This autobiography, written with journalist Bob Harris, tells the story from Viv's point of view, and is pretty much what cricket fans would expect from the man who was no stranger to controversy on a number of occasions during his playing days. Richards' career in cricket is fully covered from its inception until his failure to secure appointment as coach of the West Indies side to tour England in 2000. Playing days in England for Somerset and Glamorgan are recalled, alongside many memorable matches for the West Indies, and opinions on opponents and team-mates from around the world. Viv's great mate Botham of course features heavily, the former looking back on the special relationship they clearly had both off an on the field, where they enjoyed many a good battle. And Richards, it seems, loves nothing more than a battle. This combative nature, along with fierce determination, allied to loyalty to friends and his beloved Antigua, and the Caribbean in general, shine through as the key themes in his success. Flavoured with a sense of humour, these characteristics ensure that Viv's story is as entertaining as the batting with which he thrilled crowds around the world. --Trevor Crowe |

services in Bath and Somerset. It is part of the First Group. The company combines the
former operations of Badgerline (which joined First
Bus in 1995) and the Somerset operations of Southern National,
acquired by First Group in 1999. Badgerline had itself
been formed from the southern area operations of the Bristol Omnibus
Company in 1985 and privatised in 1986. Southern
National was split off in 1983 from Western National (then
part of the National
Bus Company) and privatised in 1988.In 2003 First Group changed
the legal structure of some of its bus operating
subsidiaries, and as a result, First Bristol Buses Ltd
(the entity which had been Bristol Omnibus
Company, a company originally incorporated in
1887) became First Somerset & Avon Ltd.

Weddings What better way to turn up to the ceremony than in Derek Trotter's Reliant Van? Your fiancee will be turning up in her vintage Rolls, so why not arrive in a bit of style yourself? We do plenty of weddings throughout the year and the impact is phenominal every time. At a time where everyone is feeling a little nervous, it can act as a great calming measure - and it really adds something to the whole occasion! At a wedding, we will normally drive the groom and best man to the ceremony. This is where the bulk of the photos are taken and the van is often a major attraction here! Once the ceremony is completed, we will drive some guests onto the reception where more photos and sometimes a few fun drives can be done. |

The Official Taunton
Heritage Trail is marked with heritage plaques in the
ground to mark the route The trail takes in 44
historic sites and properties |
We have dutifully copied below &
published, by the Taunton Tourist Information Centre,
the fine booklet available on the Heritage Trail . The
Photographs have been provided by a multitude of
people whom we thank.
You'll be able to find a modern interpretation of King Arthur’s sword in the stone on Castle Green and a plaque at the Northern end of the High Street commemorating the declaration of the Duke of Monmouth as King in June 1685. 1. 4 Fore Street -
Vision Express Built as the "new" Wilts and
Dorset Bank in 1865, it was later occupied by the
Inland Revenue and the altered in 1892 to house
Drayton's Jewellers, which closed in about 1994.
The shop front of Drayton's is still in situ today
and is one of the earliest complete examples of
its kind in the town. Note the plaque to Alfred
Bult Mullet, who was born next door, he designed
the Old Executive Building, adjacent to the White
House in Washington DC and also designed the first
built skyscraper in Washingto - the Baltimore Sun.
Also note the polychromatic stonework.
|
2.Street
Lighting
On the 1 May 1886, Taunton was the
first town in the South West to permanently adopt street
lighting. The 1930's street lamps, which formerly
delineated the " triangle" in front of the Market House,
have been resited to the rear |
|
3.
The Market House
This centrepiece building was
originally constructed in 1772. In 1930, the former
single storey wings were demolished to allow highway
improvements and the main building was also revamped.
Until the comprehensive highway improvements were
carried out in 1996, the longstanding "triangular" area
of land in front of the Market House remained, albeit no
longer in its former use as the town's main market,
which operated until 1929.. Traditionally, the centre of
the town, this area, as today, has always been busy.
This was confirmed during recent hihway improvements,
when more than 11 public houses, dating from about 1750,
were found in the immediate vicinity. |
|
4.
15
Fore
Street . The Tudor House
Due to the timber framing, this
building was known for a long time as the Tudor/Tudor
Tavern. Refronted in 1578, it was at one time owned by
the Trowbridge clothiers, whose initials appear on the
facade. In 1685 it was occupied by a wealthy grocer,
Thomas Baker, father of two of the "Maids of Taunton",
who welcomed the Duke of Monmouth to the town. It was
subsequently occupied by one of the infamous, ill fated
Duke of Monmouth's Privy Council. |
|
5.
The
Old
Market Centre
Enter this modern centre via the
narrow Pig Market Lane into Jarman's Court, the latter
so named after Edward Jarman, an early Taunton chemist,
who died in 1690. Pig Market Square, pleasantly
remembered by three wooden pigs, recognises the area of
the pig market established in 1614 and operating until
1882. |
|
6.
18
Fore
Street
Outside 18 Fore Street, move towards
the road to view this building. Whilst it has a modest
Victoria facade, it hides medieval buildings with a
wealth of decorative plasterwork. Note the early gable
projecting above the current parapet and the original
side passage to the left, now giving access to Bath
Place. |
|
7.
25
Fore
Street - Prezzo/Jaeger
Built 1908 as a bank for Stuckey's,
this prominant building has housed a succession of
banks, latterly the TSB, which vacated in about 2001. |
|
8.
Bath Place
This was the former main
thoroughfare to the West of the town, until Corporation
Street was cut in 1894. Bath Place is home to a series
of small specialist shops operating from a near complete
set of 19th century shop fronts, characterised by their
octagional glazing fanlights. |
|
9.
Mechanics
Institute,
Bath
Place
This purpose built structure,
constructed by William Beadon in 1838, housed the School
of Art from 1856 and soon after the School of Science
and Art which occupied the building until about 1905
when it moved into a new, purpose built premises, Hunts
Court in Corporation Street. |
|
10.
West
End
of Bath Place
These two buildings, acting as focal
points on the approach to the town from the West,
highlight the existence of the historic Bath Place, now
mainly a thoroughfare of small specialist retailers. |
|
11.
County Hall
Understanderbly designed to have an
impact on the street scene, this purpose-designed civic
building by Emmanuel Vincent Harris OBE RA (1935) houses
a wealth of contemporary detailing including stained
glass and panelling. The architect was also responsible
for a number of local authority buildings including
County Hall, Cardiff (1909), Nottingham (1925),
Sheffield (1932), Leeds (1933) and Bristol (1939).
Taunton became the County Town of Somerset in 1935. |
|
12.
Mitre House
This building formed part of the
Convent of Perpetual Adoration, built in 1867, to the
design of J.F. Bentley. Ghostly sightings of a nun have
been reported on occasion. Formerly known as St. Paul's
House, it is the site of the medieval Chapel of St.Paul. |
|
13.
Mecca Bingo
This purpose built cinema, was
erected 1931-2, to the design of W.T Benslyn. Note the
sculptured panel above the entrance, depicting "Love and
Life Entangled in the Film". |
|
14.
Hunts Court
Purpose designed by Samson and
Cottam, the 1905 Art School has the most imposing
neo-classical facade in Taunton. Presently being
converted into apartments. |
|
15.
Cider
Press
Garden
The Old stone cider press was a gift
to Taunton and its people from Taunton Cider Company in
their Golden jubilee year in 1971 |
|
16.
The
Old
Library Building - "Pitcher & Piano"
The town's public library was opened
here in 1905, to the design of architect Alexander
Little of London and part funded by the Carnegie
Foundation. It remained the town's library until 1996
when its conversion to a public house raised some
eyebrows, due to the covenant applied by the Carnegie
Foundation, that alcohol must not be consumed on the
premises. |
|
17.
Old Municipal Buildings
The section to the right of the main
door was built in 1522 to house the town's Grammar
School. Founded by Richard Fox, then Bishop of
Winchester it cost £226 to build. Badly damaged in 1645
during the Civil War, it was restored and continued as a
school until 1885. It then became offices of Taunton
Corporation until its widespread offices were
centralised in 1987. |
|
18.
Castle Bow
This is the last surviving remnant
of the Castle's outer bailey, the keep being destroyed
on the orders of Charles II. Originally, this was the
East Gate of the Castle and had a drawbridge - note the
modern portcullis, set in the original grooves. |
|
19.
Castle Hotel
Built about 1815 by the Easton
family, as a private 2 storey house, it was originally
designed to mirror the Winchester Arms. A 3rd and
subsequently 4th storey were added in the 20th century,
thus destroying the original concept. The building was
first converted to its current use in 1834, when it
opened as Sweets Hotel. Well known today, for its
cuisine and elegant accomodation, famous past guests
have included the future Tsar Nicholas I in 1817, the
Duke of Wellington in 1819, the Emperor of Mexico in
1824 and the then Prince of Wales in 1856 and 1932. |
|
20.
Castle Green
The area defined by the Castle,
Castle Hotel, Old Municipal Buildings, Winchester Arms
and Mecca, once formed part of the outer bailey of the
Castle, added in 1215-16. It was also the site of
Taunton's only burial ground from Saxon Times until the
12th century. Skeletons have been discovered and others
will no doubt follow when deep digging is found
necessary in the area. Understandably, this area (and
beyond) is a scheduled Ancient Monument. The original
Saxon Minister almost certainly stood on Castle Green.
The Castle was sleighted in c1662, with Castle Green
becoming the site of a cattle and sheep market from 1788
with the Assize fairs, finally being banned by the
Market Trustees in 1871. On the Green between the Castle
Hotel and the Winchester Arms you will find the
legendary Sword in The Stone to commemorate the
legendary King Arthur and the Round Table. |
|
21
Taunton Castle
The remains of the Castle and later
buildings, will house the Museum of Somerset after
conversions are made. By the early 10th century, this
was possibly the site of the Bishop's Hall. A Saxon site
built up with a motte & bailey during the early 12th
century by Henry be Blois. A tall stone keep was built
in the early 13th century. It had fallen into ruin by
1600 but it was repaired during the Civil War although
afterwards, in 1662, the keep was demolished and only
the base remains. The Castle was the scene of the
"Bloody Assize" when Judge Jeffrey's tried over 500
supporters of the failed Monmouth rebellion in 1685. It
also served as a prison. The last trial in the south
west for witchcraft was held here in 1707, when Maria
Stevens was acquitted. Threats to demolish the remains
of the Castle and associated buildings in order to
redevelop were thwarted by Somerset Archaeological &
Natural History Society purchase in 1874.It has now been
restored as the County Museum. |
|
|
22.
Original
St
James Almshouse
This almshouse was one of several
which once stood in St.James Street. They were removed
in 1897, with the frame of this one initially re-erected
in former moat. In 1992, it was moved to its current
site and restored, now serving as an important social
record of living conditions in the medieval period. |
23.
The
Winchester
Arms
The Winchester Arms was built by
Josiah Easton in 1816 on the site of another Inn called
the Horse & Jockey. Easton built what are now the
ground and first floors of the Castle Hotel at the same
time, and initially formed a matching pair. |
|
24.
Millers
(Ina
Cottage), Mill Lane
Millers ( was called Fleur de lys in
1800's) is in Mill Lane- the site of old mill. It became
a Fulling Mill in the 1200's. |
|
25.
Post
Office,
North Street
This imposing purpose-built building
was opened in 1911. It occupies the site of the Spread
Eagle Inn, demolished as "surplus to requirements", when
magistrates closed many houses in the town, at the
behest of teetotallers in the early 20th Century. (Note
the Black Horse Logo on the adjacent property) |
|
|
26.
North
Street
Congregational Church
Built 1844 as North Street
Independant Chapel. |
27.
Tone Bridge
The medieval Tne Bridge, first
mentioned in 1362, was rebuilt in 1810 and again in
1834. |
|
28
St
James
Church
This late medieval church with its
fine 15th Century font and pulpit (1633) was originally
built to serve inhabitants who lived outside the town's
defences. The tower, in common with most medieval
churches was rebuilt in 1871-1875. A notable grave here
is that of Joseph Whidbey, the explorer and engineer,
who was in charge of building Plymouth Breakwater. |

St

Cricket Museum ("Priory Barn)
This building is likely to be part
of the medieval Augustinian Priory. The latter
disappeared in 1539 with the dissolution of the
monastries under Henry VIII. The "barn" now houses the
Cricket Club Museum, which is open throughout the summer
Tuesday to Friday between 10.30 am and 4pm, whilst on
match days (apart from Twenty20 games) it opens one hour
before the start of play. |

St
Mary
Magdalene Church
There has been a church on this site
since at least the 12th Century. The magnificent 163
foot tower was rebuilt to its original design in 1862.
In order to raise the stone during construction, a
pulley system was used, operated by a donkey walking
down Hammet Street. When the work was complete, the
donkey was hauled to the top of the tower to admire the
view it had created. Taunton's first known fire engine
was housed in the church tower (1734) |

retains it's original Georgian Houses, albeit now in
different uses. |

Mr Monkey in TauntonMay 2004 - Mr Monkey spends a night and a day in Taunton Click here for The Mr Monkey Web PagesMiss Carol had a presentation to do in Taunton, and, as neither Mr Monkey or Mr Rik had been to Taunton, they decided to go too, so she'd have someone to talk to on the train. Follow the links on the images below for more details of Mr Monkey's trip. Copyright Rik Shepherd and Mr Monkey. |

|
Thursday Mr Monkey caught a train from Stockport, changed at Birmingham New Street, and, eventually, arrived at Taunton station. |
From the station
he took a taxi to the Corner House Hotel, which turned
out to be on a corner. Mr Monkey's room had a fine view
of a road. |
After Mr Monkey's
humans had a fine meal, he took them for a walk around
Taunton in the dark. |
He scampered along
North Street, until he found a bridge, which is called,
on the maps, The Bridge. Under the bridge is the River
Tone, which is very dark at night. |
|
|
|
|
After he'd walked
around Taunton some more, he trotted down Hammett
Street, which has a floodlit pillar at the end. |
Eventually he got
tired, and went back to the Corner House Hotel. |
Friday After Miss Carol went off in a taxi to do her presentation, Mr Monkey walked off to see what Taunton looked like by daylight. |
After leaving the
hotel, he went to investigate the County Hall, but
decided not to go inside. |
|
|
|
|
Mr Monkey was
trying to find the tourist information office, but
accidentally found the Vivary Park instead. These
magnificent gates were built by Walter McFarlene &
Co of Glasgow's Saracen Foundry and completed in May
1895. |
Slipping through
the park gates he found this rather magnificently
decorative fountain, commemerating the death of Queen
Victoria. |
So close to Vivary
Park that you'd think they were the same place is a bit
of parkland called the Wilton Lands. |
Mr
Monkey crossed a bridge to get to them, and enjoyed
walking around by a small lake. |
|
|
|
|
Leaving the park, Mr Monkey scampered
back into the middle of the town, admiring the buildings
as he went. |
He looked both ways carefully before
crossing the roads. |
Mr Monkey decided to visit the Somerset
County Museum, in Taunton Castle. The castle was
started around 1138; for several centuries people
added bits to it.Then they decided they didn't need
castles any more, knocked bits of it down |
(Charles
II
was
especially
annoyed because Parliamentarians held the castle
throughout most of the Civil War) , let bits
fall over, and built a hotel around the gatehouse. All
that's really left of the castle now is the inner
bailey. |
|
|
|
|
They've got a variety of things in the
museum. In the main museum Mr Monkey found lots of
ceramics, and some horse brasses, and some bits left
over from the Battle of Sedgemoor, and the shoes of a
blind giant |
In a side room he found a collection of
steam engines that were used to power agricultural
machinery. |
In a gallery about archeological finds in
Somerset, Mr Monkey found a Roman mosaic which someone
had fixed to a wall, and a reconstruction of a
prehistoric grave. |
They've also got a heap of 9238 coins that
a Roman buried and forgot about, and bits of Bronze
Age pathway from the Somerset Levels. |
|
|
|
|
Taunton was founded by a charter in 904,
which was 1100 years ago, so they're having a special
Taunton 1100 celebration. |
The County museum has a special exhibition
about the history of Taunton from prehistoric times to
the 19th century. You can tell it's a special
exhibition because they've been able to borrow the
Codex Wintoniensis* from the British
Library. |
Outside the castle, Mr Monkey found a sword
stuck in a stone. There didn't seem to be any
explanation for it, but it's probably something to do
with King Arthur. |
Mr Monkey didn't try pulling the sword out
of the stone, in case someone made him king of
somewhere, but ran through the castle gardens, to
study the outside wall of the castle. |
|
|
|
|
leaving
the
castle
gardens, Mr Monkey found the River Tone, and a place
where he could see The Bridge. |
He also found a little stream off the river
that seemed to be controlled by a pair of sluice
gates. |
Mr Rik complained that he was hungry, so Mr
Monkey suggested a quick visit to The Brazz, which is
part of the Castle Hotel. The gateway to the left of
the restaurant is the East gate of the castle, which
has been sort of swallowed up by the hotel. |
Wandering around Taunton, Mr Monkey noticed
a sign warning that the church could take no
responsiblity for anyone walking down a narrow street. |
|
|
|
|
He immediately scampered down the lane, to
see what the danger might be. He's such an daring
monkey. |
At the end of the lane, Mr Monkey found the
parish church of St Mary Magdalene, which has been
there since 1308. |
Mr Monkey was really impressed by the tower. The magnificent 163 foot tower was rebuilt to its original design in 1862. In order to raise the stone during construction, a pulley system was used, operated by a donkey walking down Hammet Street. When the work was complete, the donkey was hauled to the top of the tower to admire the view it had created. |
Mr
Monkey
found his way down to the Tone, and walked along the
bank, away from Taunton. |
|
|
|
|
After a
while he came to somewhere called the Firepool, where
there's a bridge over a rather dramatic weir. Mr Monkey
was crossing the bridge when he noticed a heron failing
to catch its dinner. |
After Mr Monkey
scampered across the bridge, he paused to look back at
the scary water for a moment. |
Then he trotted
across a second bridge, over the Bridgewater and Taunton
Canal. The derelict building claims to have been a British
Railways Taunton Freight Concentration Depot. |
Mr Monkey nipped
down from the canal bridge to inspect the canal lock, |
|
|
|
|
which is where the
Bridgewater and Taunton Canal opens into the River Tone. |
After inspecting the canal, Mr Monkey
looked at Mr Rik's watch, and found out it was time to
head for home. |
So he scampered up to
Taunton station, and waited for his train. |
The train took Mr
Monkey through Bristol and up to Birmingham, where,
slightly worryingly, it went into reverse. |
|
|||
This was obviously
deliberate, because it ended up in Wolverhampton, where
Mr Monkey changed for the train to Stockport, and home. |
