Is this about Money or Fear?
Some of the History of Fear

Bob Woolmer

Robert Andrew Woolmer (14 May 1948 – 18 March 2007) was an international cricketer, professional cricket coach and also a professional commentator. He played in 19 Test matches and 6 One Day Internationals for England and later coached South Africa, Warwickshire and Pakistan.

On 18 March 2007, Woolmer died suddenly in Jamaica, just a few hours after the Pakistan team's unexpected elimination at the hands of Ireland in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Shortly afterwards, Jamaican police announced that they were opening a murder investigation into Woolmer's death. In November 2007, a jury in Jamaica recorded an open verdict on Woolmer's death, after deciding that there was insufficient evidence of either a criminal act or natural causes. In an interview to Fox News former South African cricketer Clive Rice claimed that Bob Woolmer was murdered by mafia Betting Syndicates, saying “These mafia betting syndicates do not stop at anything and they do not care who gets in their way.”

Sri Lanka team attacked: Sri Lanka cricket team
                  attacked in Lahore, Pakistan

3 March 2009:
Up to 14 heavily armed gunmen shot at the Sri Lankan team bus as it drove to the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore

Former Australia pace bowler Geoff Lawson, who succeeded Bob Woolmer as Pakistan coach after the Englishman's mysterious death at the 2007 Cricket World Cup, says there is every chance the accused players, if they are guilty of match-fixing, could have been involved out of fear rather than for personal gain.

COMMENT

Having read about the Pakistani "match fixing" and various cricketers in their side being interviewed our investigative team have been delving into this matter. Whilst not trying to condone cheating in this manner one must feel sorry for their cricketers.

On the one hand they wish to play cricket and be part of the World Scene but on the other hand one only has to look at the dead body of Bob Woolmer to the left to realise that these cricketers are being made "offers" they can not refuse. It is, to them not a matter of money- it is a matter of Life & Death.

Certain PCB officials on condition of anonymity said that an influential section of the board is slave to the betting mafia that is operating from Karachi.

The PCB is under huge pressure and that stems from its own backyard. There is so much filth. Even if they (PCB) call for an investigation, nothing will come out. From start to finish, don't expect anything to be transparent. Things are way beyond their control .

It is clear that the buzz now is gradually shifting from the tainted players to the board itself and certain individuals talk in hushed tones about the mafia that runs the betting syndicate from the murky labyrinths of Karachi.

It is for the police in Pakistan , England, Australia, South Africa or any major cricketing nation to bring the REAL VILLAINS to Justice.

http://www.guluna.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Chairmen-pakistan-cricket-board.jpgPakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Butt claimed in an interview with NDTV on Sunday that there was talk in the bookmaking fraternity that some England players had "taken enormous amounts of money" to fix the third one-day international at the Oval on Friday - although he has since admitted he has no proof.

What Mr Butt said was totally uncalled for, unsubstantiated and he has done a lot of harm for relationships between England and Pakistan, and Pakistan and the ICC.

http://static.cricinfo.com/db/PICTURES/DB/052004/052330.player.jpgLord MacLaurin, the former chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, believes England are right to consider legal action against Butt and told Five Live: "The England side are absolutely furious, I'm sure, with those allegations against them and they're looking at taking legal action against the gentleman concerned - and I don't blame them for that.
Come off it Ian- what would you do if your life was in danger? Unfortunately none of this has anything to do with cricket- it has to do with criminals and justice You are a Deputy Lieutenant of Wiltshire.

GREAT BRITAIN (DEVON & SOMERSET WANDERERS) STILL HOLD THE OLYMPIC CRICKET TITLE

At the 1900 Summer Olympics, a cricket tournament was contested. Although four teams were originally expected to compete, Belgium and Holland (the Netherlands) pulled out of the competition, leaving a Great Britain side to play a France side. Neither team was nationally selected. The British side was a touring club team, Devon & Somerset Wanderers. The French team consisted of Britons living in Paris, reportedly mostly members of the British Embassy. By Captain's agreement the game was played as a 12-a-side game, unlike the usual 11 in most cricket matches. The two-day game was played commencing on August 19, 1900. Great Britain batted first and scored 117. France were then bowled out for 78. Great Britain then scored 145 for 5 in their second innings, setting the hosts a target of 185, who were promptly bowled out for 26. This meant that Great Britain was convincingly the winner of the contest. The Great Britain team was awarded silver medals and the French team bronze medals, together with miniature statues of the Eiffel Tower. With the match billed as part of the 1900 Universal Exposition, neither side appears to have realised they were competing in the Olympics. The match was only retrospectively formally recognised as being an Olympic contest in 1912, when the International Olympic Committee met to compile the definitive list of all events in the five modern Olympiads up to that point. Since then cricket has not appeared in an Olympic Games.

The formation of the original Kent County Cricket Club took place in Canterbury in August 1842, and played its initial first-class match against All-England that same month. On March 1 1859 there was a substantial reorganisation and the present Kent CCC was formed. Kent had been proclaimed Champion County in 1837, and held the title through most of the 1840s. However, they did not claim it again before the formation of the County Championship as we know it in 1890.

Somerset County Cricket Club

Somerset County Cricket Club was first formed in August 1875, following a cricket match at Sidmouth between the Gentlemen of Somerset and their Devon hosts, in which the visitors were successful. Originally the idea of those who had formed the County Club was not to have a home ground, but to take their matches to different grounds around Somerset. When the team played in Taunton they chose Fullands School as the venue, which at the time was one of the best in the region.

The Somerset team remained nomadic until 1881, when Taunton Athletic Club opened a sports centre on the Priory Fields next door to the River Tone, which soon became the home to the County Club.Somerset played their first 'home' match during 1882 and during that year one of the teams to pay a visit were the Australian tourists.Initially Somerset did not enjoy first class status, but after winning the 'second-class championship' in 1890 first class status followed in 1891 and since then the Club has enjoyed a long and colourful history, with many ups and downs, both on and off the pitch.

Whatever the fortunes of the team on the field the Club has remained at it's County Ground home, which it has owned since it was first acquired by the then secretary Henr y Murray-Anderdon, just before the start of the 20th Century.Down the years Somerset has had many colourful and influential characters playing for them including Lionel Palairet, Sammy Woods, Jack White, Arthur Wellard and Harold Gimblett, who all left their mark on the Club before the 2nd World War. However it was not until the late 1970's and early 1980's that Somerset won it's first trophy, but when it did the Club enjoyed a golden era winning five competitions in as many years.

The young side that had been brought together under the watchful eye of Brian Close included Ian Botham, Viv Richards and Joel Garner who were Captained by Brian Rose, who is now the Director of Cricket at the Club.Following the 'Glory Years' the Club's loyal supporters had to wait a further 18 years before they enjoyed the sweet taste of success again, which they did in 2001 when they lifted the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. Further success followed four years later with winning the Twenty20 Cup and now with a young team full of exciting talent, the Club that was formed in Devon 131 years ago, looks to be on the verge of another golden era and will be bidding to win the one trophy that has eluded them up until now - the coveted County Championship

The first phase of the redevelopment will provide excellent new facilities for the cricket club and for Taunton, and is being spearheaded by Pegasus Retirement Homes Plc. There are 65 luxury apartments for the over 55s, many with views over the cricket ground. Additionally there is a new public space for the people of Taunton between the CountyGround, the Brewhouse Theatre and the River Tone which will be fronted by a restaurant and shops. The cricket club will benefit from 3 new spectator stands capable of seating nearly 3,000 spectators as well as a new scoreboard and facilities for ground staff.

SURREY COUNTY CRICKET CLUB
Its limited overs team is called the Surrey Brown Caps. The club is the most financially secure first class county club, with a turnover of £22 million in 2006. The club's home since its foundation in 1845 has been The Oval cricket ground (currently known officially as the 'Brit Oval' following a sponsorship deal with the Brit insurance company), within the Kennington area of Lambeth in south London. Some home games each season are also played at Whitgift School, Croydon and at Woodbridge Road, Guildford. The traditional club colours are chocolate brown and silver. The club badge is the Prince of Wales' three feathers. Lord Rosebery obtained the permission to use this symbol from the Prince of Wales, owner of the land on which The Oval stands, in 1915.
It is widely believed that cricket was invented by children living on the Weald in Saxon or Norman times and that the game very soon reached neighbouring Surrey. Although not the game's birthplace, Surrey does claim the honour of being the location of its first definite mention in print. Evidence from a 1598 court case confirms that creckett was played by schoolboys on a certain plot of land in Guildford around 1550.

Cricket became well established in Surrey during the 17th century and the earliest village matches took place before the English Civil War. It is believed that the earliest county teams were formed in the aftermath of the Restoration in 1660. The earliest known first-class match in Surrey was Croydon v London at Croydon on 1 July 1707 . In 1709, the earliest known inter-county match took place between Kent and Surrey at Dartford Brent. Surrey continued to be a major county through the 18th century. Probably its greatest players during the underarm era were the famous bowler Edward "Lumpy" Stevens and the wicketkeeper/batsman William Yalden, who both belonged to the Chertsey club.
Surrey CCC was founded on the evening of 22 August 1845 at the Horns Tavern in South London, where around 100 representatives of various cricket clubs in Surrey agreed a motion put by William Denison (the club's first Secretary) "that a Surrey club be now formed". A further meeting at the Tavern on 18 October 1845 formally constituted the club, appointed officers and began enrolling members. A lease on Kennington Oval, a former market garden, was obtained by a Mr Houghton from the Duchy of Cornwall. Mr Houghton was of the old Montpelier Cricket Club, 70 members of which formed the nucleus of the new Surrey County club. The Honourable Fred Ponsonby, later the Earl of Bessborough was the first vice-president. Surrey's inaugural first-class match was against the MCC at The Oval at the end of May, 1846.[7] The first inter-county match, against Kent, was held at The Oval the following month.[8] However the club did not do well that year, despite the extra public attractions at the Oval of a Walking Match and a Poultry Show. By the start of the 1847 season the club was £70 in debt and there was a motion to close. Ponsonby proposed that 6 life members be created for a fee of £12 each. His motion was duly passed, and the club survived.
Surrey CCC has had three notable periods of great success in its history. The club was recognised as "Champion County" seven times during the 1850s; it won the title eight times from 1887 to 1895 (including the first ever officially constituted County Championship in 1890); and seven consecutive outright titles from 1952 to 1958 inclusive following a shared title (with Lancashire) in 1950. In 1955, Surrey won 23 of its 28 county matches, a record that still stands.[10] To date, Surrey has won the official County Championship 18 times outright, more than any other county except Yorkshire. Notable Surrey Cricketers include:

Cricket Match
The Editor's Cricketing Story
England Their England Re-Visited
Cricket Match

The two most popular British Sports are Football and Cricket. I was no more than an eager participant at both games. I have been privileged to be in the company of some of the greats in both sports and even been in the same team if not in the same league. Anecdotes and stories about these sports abound. Sometimes they are funny. Others...well if W.G.Grace was alive to-day, he’d turn in his grave! In the early sixties I used to make up the numbers for Finchley Cricket Club. Because I was unemployable I used to also get invited to make up numbers at other matches. Finchley ,at that time, had a wonderful captain named Ron Howe. When you played for Ron every match seemed to go to the last ball and have an exciting ending. I believe he played Minor Counties cricket for Hertfordshire.

Anyway on this particular summer's day he had passed my name on to a chap called John Gardner. John Gardner was a rich man who promoted and enjoyed cricket. I believe he actually paid for Worcestershire to go on a pre season foreign tour once. However he ran a cricket team aptly names FORK. This stood for ” Friends of the Right Kidney”. So on this day I was invited by John to turn out for his team against Esher Cricket Club during their cricket week.

This was indeed a privilege. So after whitening my boots and pads and pressing my whites I headed off down the A3 to Esher.

By 10.30a.m. I arrived at their most pleasant ground in leafy Surrey. John Gardner was there to meet me. A bigger than life man in all dimensions. In fact someone once confided in me that when he was batting if you hit him in front it was LBW and if you hit him behind it was a wide. I was greeted with thestatement ” Wilfred Isaacs has sent two young South African cricketers down to play. Will you open with one- the other will go in No 3. Show them the ropes.” I cant be sure but I think these two young South Africans were Mike Procter and Barry Richards.

The bar was already open. Well bar is really a bit of a misnomen. It was a bathtub filled with ice and Lanson Black Label Champagne. To enliven the liver I partook of the bar and by 11 o'clock I was in the mood to face Trueman, Tyson, Holding and Wesley Hall with no fear. Out I went to bat and scored 24 in the first 5 balls before being caught on the boundary off the sixth ball.

I therefore had a chance to return to the bar. By lunch we were 241-1 wicket. By now I was having a convivial time with other team members. Names I cant remember.

One was a former captain of Northamptonshire who had turned up with everything but his Zimmer frame. whether it was his health or the Lanson Black Label he found it difficult to walk and when we fielded stayed in one place throughout the fielding period.

Another was one of the Cheeseman family. Very wealthy with a Lamborghini filled with beautiful girls. I think he parked the car with him at second slip. He played for Berkshire I was informed.

There was a thin Thespian with shaking hands. In fact he told me he went to the doctor over this problem. The doctor asked him if he drank and he replied ” Not much I keep spilling it.” It was obvious he was going to be at first slip.

Then there was Gardner himself. When we fielded the ball would roll under him and he would stamp and ask if had stopped it.

Esher C.C. was famous for its Port after lunch. I remember having a convivial lunch of claret and port with Esher’s wicket-keeper- a chap called Marques- who had played Rugby for England. Then to a comfortable deck-chair to sleep off the excellent lunch.
I believe we had declared with some telephone number of a score and Procter and Richards still batting. Now Fork took to the field.

Procter and Richards had to open the bowling as everyone else was either incapable, drunk, or in the case of Cheeseman still dealing with one of his accompanying ladies. I don't remember the result. However this motley lot in the field would have outdone any Mac Sennett comedy.

The ex-Northampton captain stood at either silly mid -on or off depending on which end was bowling. The man with shaking hands was at first slip, John Gardner was at second, third and fourth slip with a bottle of Lanson at gully. Cheeseman seemed to appear to bowl but never to field.  There was a character wearing an Oxford University Blue sweater who didn't seem to have much of a clue. All he seemed to do was polish the ball and give it to the umpire, we later found out that his blue was for marbles.

To cap it one of the Esher batsmen, with the thickest pair of glasses I've ever seen, when asked by the umpire if he wanted to take guard uttered ” No thanks I've played here before.” But the piece de resistance was the player with the wooden leg. Whilst coming up to bowl  his wooden leg got caught in one of those holes from which the pitch is watered. It took two engineers and a doctor over twenty minutes to free him from this position.

After the game Gardner asked me to put my name and details in his address book for future reference. The details on the line above were those of one E.R.Dexter. That was the nearest I ever got to the big time. I was never invited again.
