Is this about Money or Fear? |

Some of the
History of Fear
Bob Woolmer Robert
Andrew Woolmer (14 May 1948 – 18 March 2007) was an
international cricketer, professional cricket coach
and also a professional commentator. He played in 19
Test matches and 6 One Day Internationals for England
and later coached South Africa, Warwickshire and
Pakistan.
On 18 March 2007, Woolmer died suddenly in Jamaica, just a few hours after the Pakistan team's unexpected elimination at the hands of Ireland in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Shortly afterwards, Jamaican police announced that they were opening a murder investigation into Woolmer's death. In November 2007, a jury in Jamaica recorded an open verdict on Woolmer's death, after deciding that there was insufficient evidence of either a criminal act or natural causes. In an interview to Fox News former South African cricketer Clive Rice claimed that Bob Woolmer was murdered by mafia Betting Syndicates, saying “These mafia betting syndicates do not stop at anything and they do not care who gets in their way.” 3 March 2009: Up to 14 heavily armed gunmen shot at the Sri Lankan team bus as it drove to the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore Former Australia pace bowler Geoff Lawson, who succeeded Bob Woolmer as Pakistan coach after the Englishman's mysterious death at the 2007 Cricket World Cup, says there is every chance the accused players, if they are guilty of match-fixing, could have been involved out of fear rather than for personal gain. |
COMMENT
Having read about the Pakistani "match fixing" and various cricketers in their side being interviewed our investigative team have been delving into this matter. Whilst not trying to condone cheating in this manner one must feel sorry for their cricketers. On the one hand they wish to play cricket and be part of the World Scene but on the other hand one only has to look at the dead body of Bob Woolmer to the left to realise that these cricketers are being made "offers" they can not refuse. It is, to them not a matter of money- it is a matter of Life & Death. Certain PCB officials on condition of anonymity said that an influential section of the board is slave to the betting mafia that is operating from Karachi. The PCB is under huge pressure and that stems from its own backyard. There is so much filth. Even if they (PCB) call for an investigation, nothing will come out. From start to finish, don't expect anything to be transparent. Things are way beyond their control . It is clear that the buzz now is gradually shifting from the tainted players to the board itself and certain individuals talk in hushed tones about the mafia that runs the betting syndicate from the murky labyrinths of Karachi. It is for the police in Pakistan , England, Australia, South Africa or any major cricketing nation to bring the REAL VILLAINS to Justice. |
Pakistan
Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Butt claimed in an
interview with NDTV on Sunday that there was talk in the
bookmaking fraternity that some England players had
"taken enormous amounts of money" to fix the third
one-day international at the Oval on Friday - although
he has since admitted he has no proof. What Mr Butt said was totally uncalled for, unsubstantiated and he has done a lot of harm for relationships between England and Pakistan, and Pakistan and the ICC. Lord MacLaurin, the former chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, believes England are right to consider legal action against Butt and told Five Live: "The England side are absolutely furious, I'm sure, with those allegations against them and they're looking at taking legal action against the gentleman concerned - and I don't blame them for that. Come off it Ian- what would you do if your life was in danger? Unfortunately none of this has anything to do with cricket- it has to do with criminals and justice You are a Deputy Lieutenant of Wiltshire. Michael Davey - Editor |

Hampshire
County Cricket Club One of the most
forward thinking Cricket Clubs in the UK, Hampshire
Cricket is proud of its 140 year history and its
ambition and commitment to Cricket in the future
Hampshire first played first-class cricket in 1864, and first competed in the County Championship in 1895, the sixth year in which the Championship was held. They were winners in 1961 and 1973. They also won the NatWest Trophy (now the C&G Trophy in 1991, the now-defunct Benson&Hedges Cup in 1988 and 1992, and the Sunday League in 1975, 1978 and 1986. On 3 September 2005 Hampshire won the C&G Trophy by 18 runs, including a century from Zimbabwean Sean Ervine, against Warwickshire. Players Their current captain is legendary Australian Test bowler, Shane Warne, and vice-captain is England spinner Shaun Udal. Famous players include England cricket captains CB Fry, David Gower and Lionel Hallam Tennyson, 3rd Baron Tennyson; West Indian greats Gordon Greenidge Andy Roberts and Malcolm Marshall; Barry Richards of South Africa; commentator and broadcaster Mark Nicholas; England Test caps John Crawley ; Robin Smith; Kevin Pietersen; and Australians Simon Katich, Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke. Somerset County Cricket Club
was first formed in August 1875, following a
cricket match at Sidmouth between the
Gentlemen of Somerset and their Devon hosts,
in which the visitors were successful.
Originally the idea of those who had formed
the County Club was not to have a home
ground, but to take their matches to
different grounds around Somerset. When the
team played in Taunton they chose Fullands
School as the venue, which at the time was
one of the best in the region.
The Somerset team remained nomadic until 1881, when Taunton Athletic Club opened a sports centre on the Priory Fields next door to the River Tone, which soon became the home to the County Club.Somerset played their first 'home' match during 1882 and during that year one of the teams to pay a visit were the Australian tourists.Initially Somerset did not enjoy first class status, but after winning the 'second-class championship' in 1890 first class status followed in 1891 and since then the Club has enjoyed a long and colourful history, with many ups and downs, both on and off the pitch. Whatever the fortunes of the team on the field the Club has remained at it's County Ground home, which it has owned since it was first acquired by the then secretary Henr y Murray-Anderdon, just before the start of the 20th Century.Down the years Somerset has had many colourful and influential characters playing for them including Lionel Palairet, Sammy Woods, Jack White, Arthur Wellard and Harold Gimblett, who all left their mark on the Club before the 2nd World War. However it was not until the late 1970's and early 1980's that Somerset won it's first trophy, but when it did the Club enjoyed a golden era winning five competitions in as many years. The young side that had been brought together under the watchful eye of Brian Close included Ian Botham, Viv Richards and Joel Garner who were Captained by Brian Rose, who is now the Director of Cricket at the Club.Following the 'Glory Years' the Club's loyal supporters had to wait a further 18 years before they enjoyed the sweet taste of success again, which they did in 2001 when they lifted the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. Further success followed four years later with winning the Twenty20 Cup and now with a young team full of exciting talent, the Club that was formed in Devon 131 years ago, looks to be on the verge of another golden era and will be bidding to win the one trophy that has eluded them up until now - the coveted County Championship The first phase of the redevelopment will provide excellent new facilities for the cricket club and for Taunton, and is being spearheaded by Pegasus Retirement Homes Plc. There are 65 luxury apartments for the over 55s, many with views over the cricket ground. Additionally there is a new public space for the people of Taunton between the CountyGround, the Brewhouse Theatre and the River Tone which will be fronted by a restaurant and shops. The cricket club will benefit from 3 new spectator stands capable of seating nearly 3,000 spectators as well as a new scoreboard and facilities for ground staff. |

Its
limited overs team is called the Surrey Brown
Caps. The club is the most financially secure
first class county club, with a turnover of £22
million in 2006. The club's home since its
foundation in 1845 has been The Oval cricket ground
(currently known officially as the 'Brit Oval'
following a sponsorship deal with the Brit insurance
company), within the Kennington area of Lambeth in
south London. Some home games each season are also
played at Whitgift School, Croydon and at Woodbridge
Road, Guildford. The traditional club colours are chocolate
brown and silver. The club badge is the Prince of
Wales' three feathers. Lord Rosebery obtained the
permission to use this symbol from the Prince of
Wales, owner of the land on which The Oval stands,
in 1915.
It is widely believed that cricket was invented by children living on the Weald in Saxon or Norman times and that the game very soon reached neighbouring Surrey. Although not the game's birthplace, Surrey does claim the honour of being the location of its first definite mention in print. Evidence from a 1598 court case confirms that creckett was played by schoolboys on a certain plot of land in Guildford around 1550. Cricket became well established in Surrey during the 17th century and the earliest village matches took place before the English Civil War. It is believed that the earliest county teams were formed in the aftermath of the Restoration in 1660. The earliest known first-class match in Surrey was Croydon v London at Croydon on 1 July 1707 . In 1709, the earliest known inter-county match took place between Kent and Surrey at Dartford Brent. Surrey continued to be a major county through the 18th century. Probably its greatest players during the underarm era were the famous bowler Edward "Lumpy" Stevens and the wicketkeeper/batsman William Yalden, who both belonged to the Chertsey club. Surrey CCC was founded on the evening of 22 August 1845 at the Horns Tavern in South London, where around 100 representatives of various cricket clubs in Surrey agreed a motion put by William Denison (the club's first Secretary) "that a Surrey club be now formed". A further meeting at the Tavern on 18 October 1845 formally constituted the club, appointed officers and began enrolling members. A lease on Kennington Oval, a former market garden, was obtained by a Mr Houghton from the Duchy of Cornwall. Mr Houghton was of the old Montpelier Cricket Club, 70 members of which formed the nucleus of the new Surrey County club. The Honourable Fred Ponsonby, later the Earl of Bessborough was the first vice-president. Surrey's inaugural first-class match was against the MCC at The Oval at the end of May, 1846.[7] The first inter-county match, against Kent, was held at The Oval the following month.[8] However the club did not do well that year, despite the extra public attractions at the Oval of a Walking Match and a Poultry Show. By the start of the 1847 season the club was £70 in debt and there was a motion to close. Ponsonby proposed that 6 life members be created for a fee of £12 each. His motion was duly passed, and the club survived. Surrey CCC has had three notable periods of great success in its history. The club was recognised as "Champion County" seven times during the 1850s; it won the title eight times from 1887 to 1895 (including the first ever officially constituted County Championship in 1890); and seven consecutive outright titles from 1952 to 1958 inclusive following a shared title (with Lancashire) in 1950. In 1955, Surrey won 23 of its 28 county matches, a record that still stands.[10] To date, Surrey has won the official County Championship 18 times outright, more than any other county except Yorkshire.
