cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, built this

back from Europe with them. There is also a

Abbot
Pottery Caroline Smith is a Devon
potter whose slip decorated earthenware reflects the
West Country landscape. After working for a local
pottery she set up this family business with her
father. The Moorland design or 'Sheep Pottery' is
the result of walking and riding on Dartmoor from an
early age and her interest in the natural world. The
methods used in production, including hand throwing
on the wheel, follow the tradition long established
by the old Torquay Potteries

Bull Point Lighthouse Bull
Point
Lighthouse gives a guide to vessels
navigating off the North Devon Coast with a
red sector light marking the Rockham Shoal
and the Morte Stone off Morte Point. The
light
was
first established in 1879 on the headland
near the village of Mortehoe, North Devon,
and operated without undue incident for 93
years, but on 18th September, 1972, the
Principal Keeper reported ground movement in
the area of the engine room and the passage
leading to the lighthouse, and that 2"
fissures were opening up. In the early hours
of Sunday morning, 24th September, 15 metres
of the cliff face crashed into the sea and
a
further
15 metres subsided steeply causing deep
fissures to open up inside the boundary
wall. Walls cracked and the engine/fog
signal station partly collapsed, leaving it
in a dangerous condition and putting the fog
signal out of action.

Mortehoe:From
the
entrance
to
the
car park at Mortehoe, follow the sign,
“Lighthouse, Lee.” After a short distance the HM
Coastguard Station will appear on the left
followed by a sign marked Rockham Bay, continue
on until arriving at a white painted gate, which
is the entrance of the access road leading to
Bull Point Lighthouse. (marked on signpost) |

Escot Country Park and Gardens Escot Ltd is a testimony to
rural business in the 21st century. Since 1984,
John-Michael and his wife Lucy have instigated a
dramatic evolution of this traditional East Devon
rural estate, sensitively managing a programme of
diversification that has been imaginative, bold and
highly successful. The extent of change has been
dramatic, yet perfectly in tune with both the
natural and the human environment. As John-Michael
is fully trained in fish farming management, Escot
Aquatic Centre was the first new venture. However,
as the impact of foot and mouth hit rural
businesses, Escot diversified and now includes an
array of enterprises, some directly managed by the
Kennaways and some independent. These include a pond
design and construction business, an award winning
pet centre, a restaurant, conference centre, an
outdoor event company and holiday accommodationMany
attractions in this beautiful Country House &
Gardens set i 1200 acresjust outside Exeter. Many
flourishing businesses here all at ease with nature.

Finch Foundry The
tiny village of Sticklepath in Devon would
once have resounded with the sound of this
19th-century water-powered forge, which
produced agricultural and mining hand tools.
So bad was the vibration that the pub next
door had to fit beading along its shelves to
stop the glasses falling off. Opened in
1814, the foundry continued in use until
1960. Restoration work by the Trust means
that it is still in working order however,
and the three waterwheels that drive the
huge tilt hammers and grindstone can still
be seen in action.

Devon is slowly being restored after decades
of neglect. A
Victorian walled garden which was left to
fall into disrepair for 50 years, is being

at Flete Estate - an historic site near
Ermington in South Devon. There has
been a Manor at this spot since the time of
the Conquest. Then, during the 19th century
the magnificent gardens were created.
However, the gardens slipped into
disrepair at the outbreak of WW2, and from
1956 to 1998, they were used to grow
Christmas trees. And

Hackney Marshes Hackney
Marshes
LNR
comprises meadows, ponds and streams on
the edge of Kingsteignton.The
disused
Hackney canal bordered the southern end
of the Marshes. It was opened in 1843 to
decrease the distance that pack-horses
carting clay had to travel. The clay,
owned by Lord Clifford, was excavated
from the Chudleigh Knighton, Preston and
Kingsteignton areas. Originally the
pack-horses carted the clay to the clay
cellars in the Hackney hamlet from where
the bargemen or lightermen loaded the
barges. The ruins of the Hackney hamlet
are a few hundred metres from Hackney
Marshes, further along the footpath to
the estuary. The canal enabled barges to
go right up to Kingsteignton. Trading
along the canal ceased in 1928.

Plymouth Gin Distillery You
wouldn’t guess it at a glance, but this is
one of Plymouth’s oldest buildings. Long
thought to be a former friary (hence the
name), it is now seen as a Tudor merchant’s
house, converted to a gin distillery in
1793. Here is made the Plymouth Gin
traditionally provided to men on Royal Navy
ships. There are guided tours of the works.
Or you can enjoy a meal or a drink on the
premises. The former hall with its fine
timber barrel roof built in 1431 is now a
cocktail lounge. There is also a café and
shop.

Escot
Country Park and Gardens Escot
Ltd is a testimony to rural business in the 21st
century. Since 1984, John-Michael and his wife Lucy
have instigated a dramatic evolution of this
traditional East Devon rural estate, sensitively
managing a programme of diversification that has been
imaginative, bold and highly successful .Escot Gardens
- Laid out in the 18th century as 220 acres of
‘Capability Brown’ parkland and gardens, generations
of the Kennaway family have since travelled the world
bringing back a wide range of shrubs and magnificent
champion trees. Contemporary design elements
have been added by Ivan Hicks, the well-known TV
gardener-artist. Woodland paths and trails lead
to the remarkable new 4,000-beech-hedge maze; to the
birds of prey with their summertime displays; through
the beginnings of an International Tree Foundation
wood, carpeted with beautiful flowers in Spring;
through the wild boar and otter enclosures; to an

Flete
House The
garden at the historic Flete House in South Devon is
slowly being restored after decades of neglect. A
Victorian walled garden which was left to fall into
disrepair for 50 years, is being restored to its
former glory. The garden is at Flete Estate - an
historic site near Ermington in South Devon.
There has been a Manor at this spot since the time of
the Conquest. Then, during the 19th century the
magnificent gardens were created. However, the
gardens slipped into disrepair at the outbreak of WW2,
and from 1956 to 1998, they were used to grow
Christmas trees. And the project even has the support
of the Chinese Government.

Heddon
Hall
Whenever it has been opened in the past
for the NGS, Heddon Hall Garden has attracted widespread
admiration. Jane Keatley began her work here in 1987,
with creative input from luminaries such as Carol Klein
and Roy Lancaster. Taking advantage of its sheltered
position, she has made it very much a gardener’s garden,
with a wonderful collection of exotic species, shrubs
and ferns, many of which are the results of
dendrological trips abroad. The walled garden,
laid out by Penelope Hobhouse, has clipped box hedges
and cordoned fruit trees as well as flowers, herbs and
vegetables. The mainly herbaceous rose garden is home to
some ‘bizarre’ pleached limes trees. This leads onto a
glorious informal rockery and bog garden, where the
River Heddon tumbles into the three renovated stew
ponds. Enjoy the intimate valley setting from the
terrace afterwards with a delicious home made cream tea. |

by William Burges and begun in 1869, Knightshayes is a
rare survival of his work. The rich interiors combine
medieval romanticism with sumptuous Victorian
decoration and hold many interesting treasures. The
smoking and billiard rooms, elegant boudoir and
drawing room all give a wonderful insight into the
‘high noon’ of grand country house life. Edward kemp
designed this 50 acre garden at Knightshayes Court but
it owes much to the Amory family who devoted
themselves to its development. Formal terraces and
summer flowering borders, drifts of spring bulbs, a
topiary fox and hounds and a tranquil lily pool. this
extends into the ' garden of wood ' of rare trees
which is magical. The striking Victorian gothic house

owner's family can be traced back to the Cornish artist Henry Bone R.A. (1755-1834),
through the most famous of all Victorian African Big
Game hunters, Capt. F.C. Selous, friends of whom included US President Theodore
Roosevelt. In the past, there
were 30 gardeners and 500 linear feet of greenhouses.
Today, features abound in this inspirational garden for the summer, with Agapanthus, Cannas, ornamental gingers, herbs and large numbers of herbaceous perennials. The 300' south wall grows subtropical climbers. Developing bamboo grove and alpine house. Beautiful teak Victorian greenhouses. |

KINGSBRIDGE SHOW
Kingsbridge
Show continues to grow whilst trying to
maintain that local feel, keeping it's
traditional agricultural and horticultural
roots. It has been running for 123 years -
this being the 52nd year it has been held at
Borough Farm, Kingsbridge. There is something
for everyone – and so much to see and do –
it’s a great family day out whether you farm,
ride or just want to see “a little piece of
rural England” and enjoy the atmosphere. The
main ring attraction for 2005 is the racing
camels. The cattle and sheep classes are very
well supported and horses feature strongly in
the Kingsbridge Show – their events running
right through the day. The 6-Bar Show Jumping
knockout Competition, run in the main ring
last year, is a new open class this year.
Driving is also making a welcome return.
Static attractions include a Craft Tent, South
Hams Food & Drink, the Country Scene tent,
the Young Farmers section, a Woodland Tent,
Horticultural, Homecraft, Floral and
children’s classes.

WIDECOMBE
FAIR Widecombe Fair
takes place annually on the second Tuesday in
September. First held in the 1850’s, it
now attracts many thousands of visitors and
interest from all over the world. The famous
folk song recalls the story of Uncle Tom Cobley
and his friends riding to Widecombe Fair on a
grey mare. Needless to say, he and his faithful
nag will be there again this year!

DEVON & CORNWALL
CHRISTMAS EQUINE FAIR
Another
successful year for the Devon & Cornwall
Christmas Equine Fair as visitors flocked in
to shop and look at the stunning
demonstrations. Olympic rider William
Fox-Pitt drew the crowds with his Eventing
displays, whilst Lucinda McAlpine was a real
hit with the audience as she explained
Intuitive Riding. With Side Saddle, Carriage
Driving, BHS Trec and a stallion parade, the
Devon & Cornwall Christmas Equine Fair had
something for everyone. The Devon Farriers, who
were being auctioned off to raise money for
Cancer Research UK, were met with real
appreciation from the crowd and raised £750,
in addition to selling over 350 calendars
during the weekend. There is still the
opportunity to buy The Cream of Devon Farriers
calendar by calling 01626 872732. See Mr
February who had a record bid in the auction
of £220! Visitors really shopped ‘til they
dropped using the shopping crèche to off load
their bags before going back for more! There
were all the necessary equestrian items to buy
together with a few Christmas extras. This
year’s Devon & Cornwall Christmas Equine
Fair promises to be an excellent event with
more demonstrations providing great
entertainment .
